troubling realities of modern farming begin to emerge\, the pair sets off\

 nt/Pictures/Picture.ashx?PicId=219824&amp\;Size=L\n\n\nI am pleased to rep
ort that we have confirmed Texas Speaker of the House Joe Straus and Mayor
Julian Castro for our March 9\, 2010 (11:00am to 1:30pm) Water Forum at t
he Pearl Stable. They will join our other three confirmed\, excellent sp
eakers\, Robert Puente\, Weir Labatt\, and Robert Gulley and our beloved m
 oderator\, Robert Rivard.\n\nBob Rivard\, our program participants\, our p
lanning committee\, and I are committed to ensuring that this Major Forum
will be on par with our Mayoral and Nuclear Power Forums in 2009. There a
number of critically important regional\, water supply issues that are no
t well known and understood in our community. Once again\, we are confid
ent that this Forum will sell-out early. Registration information will b
e available next week.\n\nTexas House Natural Resources Chairman Allen Rit
ter has indicated that he will work to set-up water hearings on March 9 in
San Antonio. They will be held in the morning and/or afternoon and most
likely at city council chambers. (You might recall that Robert Puente was
Texas House Natural Resources Chair prior to accepting the position of CE
O of the San Antonio Water System.)\n\nI have had trouble getting Texas Se
nate Natural Resource Committee Chair Kip Averitt to join theSan Antonio h
earings. His surprising announcement this morning of retirement helps exp
lain that matter.\n\nThe Waco Tribune-Herald reported this morning that Se
nate Natural Resources Chairman Kip Averitt\, R-Waco\, says he is ending h
is re-election bid\, citing health reasons. It’s unclear whether he can ge
t off the ballot\, but even if he can’t\, his decision leaves Burleson ins
urance agent Darren Yancy as the only active Republican in the primary\, a
nd there is no Democrat running.\n\nFrom the Waco story: “He issued a stat
ement to the Tribune-Herald that said in recent years he has struggled to
balance health and the interests of his family with his role as a public s
ervant. ‘I have been advised that I must now put my health above all else
undefined for me and my family undefined and it is with deep regret that I
announce today the cessation of my Senate campaign\,’ the release states.
\n\nAveritt is chairman of a major committee (Natural Resources) and has b
een part of a key block of moderate Republican senators that has exerted s
ignificant influence in recent years. He is widely respected on all sides
of environmental issues\, and his departure will have big implications for
fights over water rights in Texas.\n\nI look forward to seeing all of you
on March 9 at the historic Pearl Stable. \nMike\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n
